HHCA GOOD NEWS #22

Posted on March 21, 2022 by Jim

March 21, 2022 Bob Meldahl

I am writing this on March 19 – the Vernal Equinox (two moments in the year when the Sun is exactly above the Equator and day and night are of equal length) will be tomorrow at 11:30 am…. And it is officially the first day of Spring! Spring in our area is perhaps the prettiest time of the year and it’s starting now!

These pictures were take over the last 2 days in the neighborhood!

Our trees, lawns and flower beds are beginning to awaken from a long winter nap… and I think we can all say we are quite ready.

With the better weather and new season – we will need to clean up from sloppy old man winter. HHCA will be involved in several “sprucing up” activities and everyone is invited to participate.

Here’s what’s ahead: April 10 Banner Maintenance.

Meet at the church building on the south end of Hudson Ave at 11:00 am. We will divide into three ladder crews of 3 people each and a cleaning table crew of 4. We will remove banners, bring them to the table where they will be washed, dried and a UV protection sprayed on them. Each cleaned banner will be returned to the ladder crew to be rehung and re-strapped. We will do this the length of Hudson Ave. (We meet on Sunday as it is the least busy traffic day on Hudson)

April 23 Saturday Neighborhood Clean-up Day!

I hope every family and individual in the HHCA area will come out and support the effort to make our area more attractive. SATURDAY APRIL 23 we meet at the shelter house at North Street Park at 9:00 AM for Coffee, Juice and Donuts. The event ends at 12 or whenever you finish the area you are wishing to work on. Theresa Gregory is our leader. She will have you sign up for areas you wish to clean up or assign you an area if you have no preference. Theresa will also distribute trash bags (and if you need them – gloves) and determine pick up areas for the bags. If you want to participate but are unable to do it that day – contact Theresa and you can establish the area you want to work on, you can put the trash in your own trash or arrange to have us pick it up on April 23rd . Contact Theresa Gregory at: bostonbuckeyes@aol.com

We have a trash truck that will be stationed at the parking lot across from Rayco Appliances (by the vacant Nazarene Church) on Hudson Ave from 9 am – noon on April 23. This is provided as a service by the City of Newark and is available to haul any trash (except tires) and appliances you wish to take down.

May 14 Saturday HHCA Area Yard Sale and Master Gardeners Plant Sale

Yard Sales start at 9:00 am (officially by the City of Newark’s information… expect visitors well before that!) I believe the plant sale will begin a 9:00 am at Walt Hingers house at 473 Hudson Ave (corner of Elizabeth) and don’t anticipate early sales. I will note that after the big fire at Timbuk in Granville last week… there may be a mad rush for plants in this area this spring!

If you wish to participate in the HHCA Community Yard Sale you may for a $5.00 fee which covers advertising, being placed on the list of participating addresses which will be distributed at the plant sale and some yard sales, and your Newark City Yard Sale Permit. (permit form is last page)

Mark your calendars for these very interesting events coming up in April and May sponsored by the Historic Hudson Community Association specifically designed for you……………………………..

APRIL 14 debut of the video presentation of the historic plane crash on Hudson Ave September 5, 1942 to be presented by Newark Historian Doug Stout. The presentation will be open to HHCA members and their guests (you must email me in advance if you will be bringing a guest as there is limited seating: bobqsp2@windstream.net). The event will be held at the Newark Library and you must arrive shortly before 7 pm (library closes at 7 pm)

If you are unaware of the incident, this was a horrific event that was known to most area residents who lived in Licking county at the time. Most of that generation is gone and the event has been all but forgotten. The Newark Advocate microfilm library is missing these newspaper accounts. Doug Stout has reconstructed the events from eyewitness accounts, old photos and declassified military information. (There is no charge for this event!)

Ever wonder what it would be like to be sent to jail? Here’s your chance!! HHCA Jail Tour.

TUESDAY MAY 17 7 PM

Ever wonder what it would be like to be sent to jail? Here’s your chance!

HHCA Jail Tour. Adults $10 Kids (under 12) free

GO TO JAIL – The Licking County Jail opened in November 1889!!

HHCA member Connie Rutter has arranged a terrific event for HHCA Members, their children and guests. A private tour of the Historic Newark Jail! Bring your phone (you are entitled to one call) – there will be lots of photo ops. The tour benefits the jail preservation and will be given by a gentleman who had lots of encounters there… of a positive nature. Such a great opportunity. Please email me to pre-register so we know the size of the group attending!

Master Gardeners Plant Sale

Always a big event in the HHCA District! We will have lots of visitors to the area for 2 big events on May 14 from 9 am – 5 pm. It’s a great day to shop for plants for your spring planting garden. The Master Gardeners will set up at 473 Hudson Ave (corner of Elizabeth) selling healthy home grown vegetable, herb and flowering plants at very reasonable prices. It starts at 9 am (sharp).

Also on this same day (since we have this large number of visitors in the neighborhood) the HHCA will be hosting a Community Yard Sale… and anyone in the HHCA area is welcomed to participate. The cost is $5.00 (see the YARD SALE FORM) and the cost covers the city yard sale permit, advertising and a list of participating addresses in the Community Yard Sale. Yard sales may be conducted on Friday and Sunday as well but the HHCA event is promoted on May 14 only. The city requests yard sales run from 9-5 but we can assure you there will be early shoppers… be ready!
