Spring is here

Posted on March 6, 2020March 6, 2020 by Jim

Spring is Here! Let’s Get Involved.

Bob Meldahl HHCA President

As nature renews its beauty after a long winter – we can too. There is nothing like getting outside on a sunny spring day and feeling the sun warming your skin as it begins to awaken the grass and plants. There is plenty of clean-up we can do to prepare our lawns and gardens for the outdoor season that is right around the corner. We can also help neighbors who could use a hand. We can go a little further and take walks down the streets or alleys and pick up the stuff that has been blowing around for the past several months. The HHCA also has a few NEIGHBORHOOD beautification projects coming up in the near future.

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP on Saturday April 25 (rain or shine)

All neighbors (families are encouraged) are welcomed to join the neighborhood clean-up. We meet at North Street Park shelter house at 9 am for coffee, juice, water and donuts. Areas of the neighborhood are claimed by teams or families (we will put teams together) and maps are distributed. We will furnish trash bags and some gloves (I suggest you bring your own gloves). The clean-up continues through 11:30 when the trash bags are picked up and taken to the compactor stationed on Hudson Ave in the large parking lot across from Rayco Appliances. It feels good to be a part of something good… and this is something good for all of us. This event will take place rain or shine so dress appropriately.

CLEAN-UP NOTE: residents who have a stockpile of spring cleaning debris may bring their loads directly to the trash compactor at 191 Hudson Ave (empty lot) between 8 am and noon. There is no charge as the City of Newark and HHCA are sponsoring this event. Tires will not be accepted.

HHCA Yard and Plant Sale Saturday May 9 (9 am start)

Thinking about having a yard sale? The HHCA community yard sale draws lots of people to the neighborhood and if you would like to be a part of the event feel free to join us. The fee is $5 and covers your yard sale permit and advertising. The Master Gardeners also have a plant sale at the home of Walt Hinger 473 Hudson Ave (corner of Elizabeth). Here are a huge variety of healthy plants from herbs and vegetables to flowering plants. The sale benefits the Master Gardeners. As many hundreds of visitors will be in the neighborhoods this day, let’s all have our properties looking their best.

North Street Park (THE NEW PARK!!)

In November 2019 we opened the “new” North Street Park. Shelter house, grills, picnic tables, tetherball, big toys, slide and lots of family fun. If you haven’t discovered the park – make a point of visiting it. The park was revitalized in a cooperative effort with the City of Newark Parks Department and the HHCA.

The entrance is a newly paved alley off of North Street. There is parking too!

Also at the park are a fenced mini dog park and neighborhood gardens (garden boxes are sold on a season long basis) where neighbors can plant their own gardens. Interested in a raised bed garden box? Contact Mark Fraizer at mark.fraizer@gmail.com

25 MPH!!!We are a residential neighborhood. The speed limit is 25. We have yard signs to remind folks. If you would like one the cost is $5 and underwritten by the HHCA (come to a meeting and request a sign or contact any HHCA member or request through our mailing address). The enforcement will be stepped up this spring. Cost of a ticket will be over $100. Please set the example and help encourage others to do 25 MPH.

April 18 (Saturday) Banner Cleaning Day! The banners that line Hudson Ave will be taken down, cleaned and a protective coating will be applied, then rehung. As there are 50 banners – this is a huge project and will require 2 teams. Ground crews clean and add the coating, ladder crews remove the banners and rehang them. We also need runners who bring the banners to the cleaning stations and return them. Want to help? Contact Bob Meldahl 2 bobqsp2@windstream.net….. We could use your help! We start at 9 am and meet at the parking lot across from Rayco Appliances.
