Strength in Numbers

We are at 73 members and 6 businesses and welcoming more to join. This is as large as this organization has been. We welcome all the people who would like to join us – so please talk to your neighbors and invite them to come to a future meeting or event to see who and what we are.

Newark’s Own

CANAL MARKET DISTRICT

FARMERS MARKET

Starts at 4:00 pm on Fridays…. Lots of vendors, home grown and homemade items from right here in Licking County! Entertainment, refreshments, and lots to see and do. Come support farmers and local small businesses and buy fresh!

Follow Canal Market District on Facebook to see special event schedules.

HHCA Thanks Bailey McCoy – Canal Market District Director, for attending our May 12 membership meeting and sharing all of the great things going on at the CMD. Please visit the Farmers Market on Fridays and pick up a schedule (or Google them). We need to support our local farmers and artisans. It’s a beautiful and welcoming event and a chance to support downtown merchants as well. Remember the CMD is under roof so come rain or shine!! Also Tuesday Markets (6-8 vendors) will start in June!!

Median Planters!

A huge debt of gratitude is owed to our median committee and in particular to Liz and Dwight McBride for the beautiful job they did with the 2 planters on either end of the median. They are welcoming sight for people traveling from downtown to Hudson Ave and vice versa. Coupled with the plantings that will go in the rectangular bed and the lamp post banners I feel we have kept up our end of the bargain with the city to maintain a beautiful appropriately decorated median. If you would like to serve on the median committee – please contact Dwight McBride head of the median committee!

Joe Kennedy HHCA Scholarship Winner Announced

Gage Jackson was introduced as our 2022 HHCA Joe Kennedy Scholarship winner on May 12 at our membership meeting. Gage is a soon to be graduate from Newark High School and will be attending the University of Kentucky in the fall. Gage excels academically as well in his leadership in the NHS soccer program. He plans to pursue studies in Health Sciences. Gage and his mother Chrissy live on Stephens Street. The U of K hat was presented Gage from HHCA and we wish him the best in his college experiences.

PLANT SALE – HHCA YARD SALE

On May 14 the HHCA area hosted many visitors! There were 18 yard sales and the Master Gardeners and Herb Society hosted plant sales at Walt Hingers home. Walt shared that the Master Gardeners made over $5,000 sales – a record! He guesses the Herb Society did very well as well but didn’t know their numbers.

The area looked beautiful! So many trees in full blossom or full canopies of brilliant green, freshly mowed lawns and lots of flowers in bloom. GREAT JOB all!

HHCA Events on the Horizon:

JULY 23 Saturday

Picnic in the Park at North Street Park – open to anyone living in the HHCA area. Lots more Info to follow!

A huge thank you to HHCA’ own Connie Rutter for arranging the private tour of the Historic Jail in downtown Newark May 17. 32 HHCA members and guests toured the facility in 2 groups and guided through all 4 floors. Lots of stories of inmates, matrons, sheriffs and a few ghosts. Former sheriff Gerry Billy was on hand as were 2 volunteer tour guides to give us the inside look. Note the stark contrast from the sheriff and matrons quarters to the inmate cell. By today’s standards this jail would house 38 prisoners. When Sheriff Gerry Billy started there were 6 to a cell (4 wall bunks and 2 slept on the floor) for a total of 130 prisoners. Absolutely no privacy. In the early years there was no running water at the jail! We were all convinced that the new jail was very important and a high priority for Licking County… and convinced no matter how nice a new jail is – we don’t want to go there either! Great educational tour!
